Julep Bar kicks off with a private opening tonight, and is now open! The design turned out beautifully (if we do say so ourselves). Some of you Bostonians may remember the old Revolution Rock Bar, and this interior is quite the departure. Take a look:

Stop in for vintage-inspired cocktails (mint juleps are on the menu, of course), tasty bites from Chef Jason Santos (Blue Inc., also a TND design, shares the kitchen) and a relaxed loungey vibe!

Don't forget to catch an all-new episode of Restaurant: Impossible tonight on the Food Network at 10pm ET! We head to a small town outside New Orleans, LA to renovate Coffee's Boilin' Pot. We create an indoor / outdoor vibe that is pure Southern hospitality. I can't post any pics so you'll just have to tune in...

Also in the works, the nightclub formerly known as Revolution Rock Bar is currently undergoing renovations and set to open very soon as Julep Bar. We're busting out the swanky Southern charm with this one. Our design features warm wood walls, sexy chrome chandeliers, smoky zebrano wood flooring and pops of citron green. I've been so wrapped up in my recent wedding and honeymoon (!) and various TND projects of late, that I haven't posted in a very long time. So I have tons of updates:

RESTAURANT: IMPOSSIBLE | SEASON 2

We are well into our second season designing restaurants for Restaurant: Impossible on Food Network. If you are already a viewer, you know that the first two episodes of the season have already aired and featured two extremely dramatic renovations of restaurants in the Philadelphia area: Dodge City in Harrisburg, PA, and La Stanza in Philadelphia.

When we arrived, Dodge City was a well-worn, extremely dated cowboy-themed throwback that needed major help. With $10,000 and 2 days, we managed to create a cozy, rustic and sophisticated space with a subtle nod to the restaurant's Western-themed roots. The owners could not have been more pleased, and we are honored to have helped create space that will enable them to enjoy a successful business for years to come.

La Stanza was by far our largest project for R:I, and it almost quite literally was Restaurant: Impossible. Thankfully, we pulled it off, and turned a vast, depressing cave-like space into a bright, mod hot-spot for South Philadelphia diners. Our most dramatic renovation yet, the restaurant renovation thrilled the owners, and continues to earn positive feedback from the community.

We've just returned from Long Beach and San Diego, CA, where we filmed two amazing episodes that I can't wait for you to see. Stayed tuned for air dates for the renovations of Off Street Cafe and The Trails Eatery!

RECENT TND PROJECTS

Blue Inc. just opened at 131 Broad Street, Boston MA 02110, in the old Lobby Bar & Kitchen. Chef Jason Santos of Hell's Kitchen puts his culinary skills to work and puts out mouth-watering internationally-inspired dishes in a style which has been referred to as, "Julia Child meets Willy Wonka." Our renovation pairs sleek white textures with mod pops of navy and orange, and a steal-the-show fantastic portrait by up-and-coming graphic artist Shaun Bhow, who happens also to be my brother. (I know, I know, nepotism hard at work. But what can I say? Good art must accompany good food and design).

Lola's Cantina just opened at 525 South Water Street, Providence, RI 02903, right next to Whiskey Republic (also a TND design). Oceanfront dining and delicious Mexican fare mix with bright pops of color and fun, whimsical decor to create an instant summer party hot-spot. Margaritas, anyone??

I'm excited for tonight's opening party for The Whiskey Republic, a new Irish pub and rock bar in Providence that we designed. The dock-side venue overlooks the water, so we kept our design simple and payed homage to the industrial bones of the building. A few design highlights: We highlighted the original wood ceiling by keeping the I-beams exposed and infusing the ceiling plane with light. We polished and stained the concrete floors to give them the appearance of old leather, built a new 27' bar, and accented new industrial light fixtures with pops of kelly green. And perhaps my favorite aspect of the design are the rough-hewn white pine planks lining the walls. They're patterned to mimic the lines of the wooden shipping crates which pass through Providence's docks. And amidst all this industrial bare-bones chic is just a touch of rock edginess. Picture metal studs lining the bar front, stainless steel mosaic tiles in the bathrooms, and black leather strapping on the banquettes. I can't wait for you to see it! Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys is one of the owners, so you can be sure that the famous Boston group will be gracing the brand-new stage for shows at WR. Tonight's event is private, but be sure to check out The Whiskey Republic and all the upcoming St. Paddy's Day festivities this week and weekend!

Robert Irvine reveals the beautifully-renovated (if we do say so ourselves!) Meglio's restaurant to its stunned owners, in an episode of Restaurant: Impossible, airing on Food Network, at 10pm/11c

I'm excited to tell you about the premiere of a new television show I worked on, Restaurant: Impossible on Food Network. The show features Food Network chef Robert Irvine, host of Dinner: Impossible and Worst Cooks in America, who sets out to 'save America’s most desperate restaurants from impending failure in just two days with only $10,000.' For two exhilarating episodes, Taniya Nayak and I and worked alongside the talented folks at Division 9 Construction to renovate the restaurants in a comprehensive design makeover. True to the show's title, each renovation was seemingly impossible to execute, given our tight budget and 2-day time frame. All things considered, I'd say we did pull off the impossible, and we are all extremely proud of the final results. The first episode airs on Food Network at 10pm/11c on Wednesday, January 19th. Trust me when I say that you won't be disappointed! Happy viewing!

Shreve, Crump & Low's Festive Tables 2010 Photographs

We had a wonderful night at Shreve Crump & Low, celebrating Festive Tables 2010 to raise money for the Room to Dream foundation. TND designed a "rustic glam" tablescape for the cause, and it turned out beautifully, if we do say so ourselves! A stunning mirrored dining table served as the base for gorgeous Match dinnerware and Baccarat crystal, adorable custom-printed linens by Pat Garmhausen of Giardino.etsy.com, a lush, field-like flower arrangement by Daniel of New Leaf Flores, and a custom-built birch pole canopy to frame the exquisite Baccarat chandelier which hung overhead like a beautiful cake-topper. Hay bales served as bench seats at the rustic glam feast, and brown striped Louis chairs graced the heads of the table. Because the event benefited children's charities, we outfitted each place setting with the name of little ones that hold special places in our hearts. We couldn't be more pleased with the turn-out and all of the positive feedback, and so I thought I would share some pictures here. Enjoy!

Shreve, Crump & Low's Festive Tables 2010

In the midst of a fun salon & spa redesign and an exciting new television project (the details of which I will reveal at a later date!), the "design hooligans of TND" (that's myself and Miss Taniya Nayak) will be creating a feature tablescape for Shreve, Crump & Low's annual Festive Tables event. We're so excited about the event, which showcases the venerable SC&L's spectacular tableware in the setting of 7 uniquely-themed designer tablescapes. The event benefits two wonderful causes, Room to Dream Foundation and Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Taniya and myself are already working closely with Room to Dream to transform the teen center at a home for adolescent girls, and I can tell you that Room to Dream is an amazing organization. If you're interested in attending Festive Tables, here's a more detailed description hot off the Shreve, Crump & Low website:

The designers have been given complete freedom to create their ultimate table settings using their personal collections and Shreve, Crump & Low's extensive china, crystal, and giftware departments. Both floors of the store will be transformed into a display of magnificent table settings that are sure to inspire anyone to create their very own Festive Table!

Shreve, Crump & Low is hosting two benefit events where guests will have the opportunity to meet the designers and bid on two hours of complimentary consultation donated by the designers.

PREVIEW NIGHT on Wednesday, November 3rd will benefit the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The MSPCC is a private, non-profit dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights and well-being of children and families.

OPENING NIGHT on Thursday, November 4th, will benefit the Room to Dream Foundation, which is committed to creating healing environments in hospitals, communities and homes, for children and adolescents facing chronic illnesses.

I have to tell you about the opening of a great new restaurant in downtown Boston: Petit Robert Central. The restaurant features the cuisine of famed Boston chefs Jacky Robert and Eric Bogardus, and trust me when I say that the classic French fare will not disappoint. As for the atmosphere, Taniya Nayak and I designed the space right down to the gorgeous reclaimed wood walls and we couldn't be more proud. We started out the project with the directive of a traditional French brasserie, and it evolved into a fresh, rustic understated Parisian bistro. The large open restaurant on the second floor of 101 Arch St overlooks Dowtown Crossing, and features a soothing cream and black palette, a huge open bar, rustic old barnwood lining the walls, large custom-designed industrial chandeliers, white subway tiles, a graphic chalkboard wall, pops of chartreuse green, and large mod topiary sculptures to bring a touch of whimsy. From the beginning, we knew we wanted Central to be a place for all crowds; a place where you would want to spend some time. Petit Robert Central opens Monday, so stop in, settle into one of the plush tufted banquettes, and get your feast on. Bon Apetit!

Furnishing Your Home on a Budget

Since we moved into our new condo last month, my fiance and I have been very busy little nesters. We had almost no furniture with us when we moved (having ditched our tired old hand-me-downs) and faced the fun and rather daunting task of filling our happy home on a fairly limited budget. And really, who doesn't have a budget? Having worked in design for television (with production budgets much lower than the average TV viewer might think) and on designs for business owners whose bottom line is always cost, I have picked up a thing or two about saving money and creating high-end looks for less-than-high-end prices.

Tip #1: Set your budget, sort your priorities, and figure out which pieces are most important to you. For us, we knew we wanted to invest in a bedroom set that could be with us for the next 60+ years, and even the most novice furniture shopper can probably figure out that the big box furniture stores of the world simply can't provide the longevity of well-made solid wood pieces. Don't get me wrong-- Ikea has a place in the world and I've been known to leave there with a trunk-ful of scores, but it's just not a good bet for long-lasting casepieces. Knowing this, we braced ourselves to spend a heftier portion of our furniture budget on our bedroom furniture, and are ecstatic that we did:

Tip #2: Know your limits. While I love perusing the posh to-the-trade showrooms of my local design center, I'm realistic enough to know that even with my trade pricing, the pieces are simply way out of my range. And for most people, however expansive your budget, there are almost always places that you are probably better off avoiding (unless you like moping around wishing you could afford that amazing chaise, etc.).

Tip #3: Go for classics with large furniture pieces, but mix it up with fun and current accents and wall colors. That uber chic ikat-printed sofa may look fabulous in the showroom (and it is!) but be wary of the urge to purchase large trendy items. Such a bold and style-specific choice may limit your design decisions and flexibility down the road, and you could ultimately grow tired of the piece far sooner than your budget will enable you to replace it. Dress up a classic sofa with fun accent pillows which can be easily and inexpensively changed out for a style update.

Tip #4: Mix bargain finds with higher-end pieces for a truly custom and dynamic space. You'd be surprised at how posh a West Elm coffee table looks underneath a one-of-a-kind vintage light fixture. A few carefully-placed splurges will really go far, when mixed in with more budget-friendly items.

Tip #5: Don't be afraid to shop online! While I feel that it is necessary to test drive, say, a sofa before purchasing (you have to sit in it, feel it, etc.) you can find some amazing deals online for tile, lighting, art, window treatments, etc. We got some incredible deals by buying a lot of things online, including tile for our kitchen back splash, lighting and window treatments. Don't forget to check out return policies, price-shop on competing websites, redeem online coupons and read buyer reviews-- you'll save money and make better-informed purchases.

Tip #6: Think outside the box. When you're simply not finding anything that works for your space, look into alternatives like refinishing an old item or having something custom-made. Sometimes custom costs less than ready-made, believe it or not. When we couldn't find the right area rug for our living room, we simply went to Home Depot, picked out the perfect high-pile broadloom in muted grays, and ordered it custom-bound in the exact size we needed for literally half the price of comparable ready-made area rugs.

Tip #7: Pace yourself. If you can't get that perfect chair because it's out of your price range, don't rush out to buy the next best thing. You may need to wait only a few weeks for the next big sale-- just ask a sales rep at the furniture store. Or if you simply can't find the right accent piece, be patient and keep your eyes open for the next few months while you're out shopping. Many shops like Home Goods change their merchandise frequently, and you never know what treasures are coming in their next shipment.

Tip #8: Last but not least, have fun! Furnishing a home can be stressful because there are a lot of big decisions to be made and a lot of money is involved, but don't lose sight of the fact that your home is your haven, and should ultimately be a place where you and yours are happy to be no matter what. The effort and care expended into it are what make it yours, and will make the end results that much more rewarding.

Our new condo: in a beautifully-restored 1880's Victorian mansion

I've been a busy bee this past few months: first and foremost, I got engaged to the love of my life, Jonathan! I am also working on three exciting new restaurant projects with Taniya Nayak Design, and Jonathan and I are buying our first place-- a condo in the Boston suburb of Watertown. As you may expect, the prospect of designing our brand new home from top to bottom is thrilling. I have so many ideas, and with roomfuls of furniture and furnishings to purchase, I have been researching all of my great options for everything from bathroom vanities to bedroom armoires. In my research I made a great contact at CSN Stores, and have been asked to review an item of my choice from any of their sites. I now have yet another exciting selection to make, so stay tuned for my review, and photos of our newly-designed home!

The show features talented designer and host Taniya Nayak of HGTV's Designed to Sell, and combines elements of travel and home design. The show follows homeowners on an exciting all-expense paid vacation, and while they're away, a room or rooms in their home are transformed in a design inspired by elements of their trip. They return to find spaces which are fresh and inspiring, and which evoke all the pleasant memories from their vacation. The first episode will follow fun-loving homeowners Joy and Jason to Turks & Caicos, and then back to the East Coast for a stunning sunroom / living room / dining room design reveal. We're in the process of renovating a large restaurant in downtown Boston, turning an upscale American power-lunch venue into a chic vintage industrial style French brasserie. Picture crackled white subway tiles, dark wood herringbone flooring, stamped tin ceilings and modern lighting. The possibilities are both endless and exciting, and we've come across some fabulous finds. One in particular, the Quill chandelier from Niche Modern, is just so beautiful that I had to share it with you. I've always loved the Niche Modern line, and implementing these amazing hand-crafted chandeliers in the restaurant is a ridiculously exciting prospect. They're not cheap, but completely worth the squeeze on the budget, if you ask me. I plan to post pictures of the restaurant renovation process, so stay tuned!

In a world filled with tacky sequined Santas and plastic holly berries, I prefer to decorate with just a few gorgeous key pieces, a sophisticated and unexpected color palette, and a bit of sparkle for good measure. We've been so busy designing for the second episode of Destination Design and working on a big new local project that I've had no time for blogging. In my research for work, I've come across a few items that I thought I would share. The leaf pattern wall art from Brocade is 60" wide, and so would make a really interesting and unique headboard for a queen bed, don't you think? The lovely paper covered votive holders from China Bazaar ring in for a mere $3.50, and come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Bought in multiples and arranged together on a wall shelf, they would be an inexpensive way to make a colorful impact.

HGTV's Destination Design

Big news: the television pilot we shot for HGTV is a go!!! The show, Destination Design, will feature the designs of the fabulous Taniya Nayak of HGTV's Designed to Sell and Bang for Your Buck, and myself, Taniya's design assistant. We will work with the talented carpenter/designer Lynn Kegan, also of Designed to Sell, to create amazing spaces for our homeowners. On the show, which is part travel and part design, we will send homeowners on an exciting vacation and design a room in their home to evoke various highlights of their trip. The homeowners will return home to find fresh, modern and dynamic spaces tailor-made to reflect their unique vacation experiences. We begin filming in October, and the series is slated to run on HGTV within the year. Needless to say, we couldn't be more excited about the opportunity, and our heads are already spinning with endless design opportunities! Stay tuned for updates about the show's series premiere...

My home office

A little while ago, I blogged about the plans I had for furnishing my brand new home office. I had a tight budget, but with a little ingenuity I was able to create a space for myself that I am truly fond of. I already love my job, but this home office makes me love it even more! Color Palette Inspiration

I am writing a few articles about color selection in home design, and I found this amazing little website in my research. It's a free tool where you can upload any jpeg picture you like, and it instantly generates a color palette of all the predominate hues in your image. The colors are all named, and you can download them into Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE) format for Photoshop, Illustrator or Indesign. It's an amazing feature for those of you who are looking for a little color inspiration. Use a photo you already have, or just snap a quick photo of anything that captures your fancy, and away you go! Take a look at the example above.

I just got the best early birthday surprise from my sweet boyfriend Jonathan: the modular coffee table in chestnut that I've been coveting from West Elm! What a lovely interruption to my workday when the UPS man came to the front door with 2 huge boxes! What's great about this coffee table is that it's so modern and yet rustic simultaneously. And while it's rather chic, you don't feel uncouth throwing your feet up on it to watch a long football game. Actually, I've been seeing a similar style of coffee table everywhere I turn, and we are even using Restoration Hardware's version, the stunning brickmaker's table, in a client's living room. Check out all the variations of this style in the images above. Apparently, I'm not the only one that loves it!

A good interior-designer friend emailed me an article she found on textile designer Seema Krish, and what a find! The talented, Boston-based Krish, originally of India, blows me away with her ability to integrate traditional Indian aesthetics into modern and fresh fabric designs. As a fellow Boston-based Indian designer (my father hails from India), also working for a very accomplished Boston-based Indian-born designer, the incomparable Taniya Nayak, I always appreciate seeing such a talented Indian presence in the world of design. Krish's lovely to-the-trade collection of fabrics are inspired by her childhood in Bombay, and serve as a sort of homage to the once-thriving fabric trade in India. Her debut collection, Bombay Bliss, has six patterns which are all handmade and use natural fibers and low-impact dyes and production processes. The exquisite fabrics are embroidered, hand block printed, woven and appliquéd to perfection by craftswomen trained in Bombay. Some of my favorites colorways from the collection are pictured above.

How amazing would these beautiful little recycled paper coasters look displayed on a painted wall? You could use drywall-safe doublestick mounting squares to do the job without a lot of fuss. And at $9 for a set of 8, you could really cover some real estate. I recommend a symmetrically-arranged grid pattern for maximum impact. It would be such a great way to add visual interest to a lackluster span of wall. Just thinking out loud here...

Rooms that Wow

Every once in a while, I come across a room that is simply flawless. I am always tempted to just make a quick blog post about it, but then I think, 'that's not really enough to merit a blog post, is it?' The fact is, I don't have much to say about these rooms other than, 'wow.' So, rather than filtering them in obtrusively without the fuss that they deserve, I thought I would hit you with a few of especially wow-worthy rooms. The spaces all share a few attributes which make them truly successful and, in fact, are generally the key to beautiful design:

1. Variation in texture. Don't you just want to run your hands across all of the surfaces in these spaces? That's variation in texture. Cool metallic wallpaper, sleek white leather and warm rustic wood harmonize beautifully in the first space.
2. Well-balanced color palettes. Neutrals offset by punches of color or sophisticated tone-on-tone schemes kill every time.
3. Stunning light fixtures. Approach lighting for a space as you would jewelry for an outfit. You can't go wrong.

Recently, my family took a trip down to South Padre Island, Texas for a much-anticipated beach vacation. SPI is an island in the Gulf of Mexico where we vacationed almost every summer of my childhood. As the family grew, it became harder and harder to find time to make the annual trek down south, and we were elated to come together after 8 years! This year, as always, my father made a half-serious inquiry into purchasing some beach property on the island. We've always rented what I'll call 'delightfully-tacky' beach condos. (Picture cheesy seagull paintings, pastel printed wallpaper and seashell kitsch). It always sparks the same discussion in my family, "why do so many people feel compelled to channel the Golden Girls' set in the design of their beach homes?" As the resident interior designer of the group, the question is always posed of me, "how would you design a beach house?" Well, this is an understandably difficult question to answer verbally, so I present to you my two takes on beautiful beach houses. The first is a perfect embodiment of the South Padre Island that I know and love-- fun, colorful and laid-back. The second would suit, say, a Montauk beach bungalow quite perfectly. Enjoy!

At the end of this month, I am moving out of the wonderful little brownstone apartment in Boston's Fenway neighborhood that has been my home for 4 years. It's bittersweet, because as much as I've loved my time here, I can't wait to begin the next chapter of my life with my boyfriend in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. We'll live in a spacious 2-story townhouse, and I will finally have my long-awaited home office. Imagine my excitement at all the design possibilities! I've had plenty of time to daydream about what my ideal office might look like, and even though I am on a tight budget, I somehow managed to find some amazing pieces for even more amazing prices. I have to say I am pretty pleased with all of the pieces I have purchased, and I can't wait to put everything together. I will post photos as soon as I have everything all set up!

LEED AP

I have been shamefully neglecting my blog for the past few weeks, studying for the LEED AP exam, but I am proud to say that I have just passed the exam, and am now a LEED accredited professional! It was exhausting and intimidating, but absolutely worth all of my hard work. I strongly believe in the importance of sustainable design, and so achieving LEED certification was extremely important to me. Although the deadline has passed to register for the LEED AP version 2 exam, I would highly recommend pursuing LEED accreditation under the newly-update LEED version 3 structure. The implementation of green building practices will only become more valued and critical to members of the design/build community. And now with a tremendous sigh of relief, I am heading off to celebrate with my boyfriend at our favorite restaurant-- cheers!

I'm off to Manhattan with my man this weekend, (this time for pleasure, not business!), and this evening I'm having fun thinking about all of the places we should visit. For accommodations, the serene urban oasis Thompson Lower East Side is calling my name. Jim Walrod and Ed Rawlings' design collaboration is spectacular. Sadly, it's not in our budget, but maybe we'll stop at the bar for a cocktail. Forge, Chef Marc Forgione's stunning Tribeca eatery, will definitely make our dinner list. Designed by Jun Aizaki of Crème Design, Forge is a perfect juxtaposition of rustic and ethereal, resplendant with reclaimed cedar walls and custom cable-hung glass lanterns. It's nothing short of perfection, and one of those rare spaces which illicits complete and total design envy on my part. Alas, I will just have to be satisfied with simply having dined there-- not having designed it!

Pilot Shoot

I've just gotten back from NYC/NJ, where we shot the pilot for a new design show for HGTV starring designer Taniya Nayak from Designed to Sell. As the design assistant for the fabulous Taniya, I can't tell you what an amazing experience it was. I've never been filmed for television before, and as exciting as that sounds, I was more excited to see the design materialize. After a month of designing and planning, it was 4 days of construction, camera crews, pure pandemonium, exhaustion, and then design magic! Now we are waiting impatiently to hear about whether or not the pilot gets picked up by the network, but we all have a good feeling about it. We should have word in the next 2 months or so, and if it gets a green light then it's full sail ahead!

Happy Earth Day! I wanted to promote Viva Terra, a wonderful eco-friendly website I found while researching products for our new show's pilot. We are using as many green elements as possible, and this site proved to be a wonderful resource. We are using the lovely little hammered drum stool as an end table in the living room. Working It

As an added perk of my fabulous new job working as the design assistant for a new show on HGTV (set to launch this year pending the pilot's approval!), I get to work mostly from the comfort of my own home. The only drawback is that my office is my living room sofa. So until I move into what will hopefully be a more accommodating place this summer, I am left to dream of the office I may one day have. Here are some of the images which inspire me. In the meantime, I continue to work with frantic excitement on the new projects from my dear old sofa!

So I've just flown back from a wonderful few days in my old hometown of Austin, Texas, and I truly wonder why I ever left. (More on the wonders of Austin later). While reluctantly thumbing through the stack of mail waiting for me at home, I saw this lovely place, The Proximity Hotel, featured in Sherwin-Williams' new Stir catalog. Located in a mill from the 1930s, the impressive industrial bones and large scale of the spaces sing with warm color palettes, soft furnishings and well-placed organic elements. I particularly appreciate the Proximity's status as the first hotel in the country to achieve Platinum LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] status. The design department at Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels employed many of the key green features mandated by the USGBC [U.S. Green Building Council], and the result is a spectacular, well-appointed hospitality destination that leaves little to be desired. This subject is particularly relevant to me, as the creation of a 'responsibly-luxurious' green hotel was the focus of my master's thesis. The hotel is a wonderful example of how luxury can be achieved without a negative environmental impact.

Living Beautifully

Because living rooms are often the most-used spaces in a home, people understandably devote the most time, effort and money to the designs of these rooms. I find that the most successful living rooms are those which balance livability with that undefinable 'wow factor.' Maximize the height of your spaces to their full advantage, highlight unique architectural features, draw focus to the windows with dramatic window treatments, and don't shy away from large-scale paintings and art pieces. Finally, combine new and old, vintage and modern, eclectic and traditional. You won't believe how impressive the final result will be.

While it may not be warm in blustery old Boston, the calendar promises warmer days ahead as today is the first day of Spring! (I find it encouraging to surround myself with cheerful spring-like things to bide my time until it actually feels like spring outside). Big News!!!

So I realize this is my third post today, but I promise it's my final one. I just had to share my big career news: I am now the design assistant on a new show for HGTV with Taniya Nayak, previously of Designed to Sell. You can also check her out on her blog Design Digs. I will have more details as our talks with the production company unfold, but we're set to shoot the pilot this May, and I will most definitely be posting updates about all my adventures working in television! Designer Spotlight: Jeff Andrews

Jeff Andrews' work is quiet in its near-perfection; earthy, still and stunning. The L.A.-based designer, of Jeff Andrews- Design, was previously a dancer and choreographer, and undoubtedly exhibits a keen sense of composition and balance in his designs. In a recent interview with 1stDibs, Andrews says, "there always needs to be a subtle fluidity, a conversation of line, color, texture, proportion and scale, art and culture, past and present." He has the rare ability to create spaces which are simultaneously cozy and sophisticated, glamorous and organic. The total effect is awe-inspiring, and somehow still not overdone. It's like Coco Chanel said, "When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on." There is such beauty in restraint.

Leo Scarff Design, a studio based out of Dublin, produces beautiful custom and in-house lighting and furniture designs. Principal Leo Scarff is a native of Dublin but also exhibits a strong Scandinavian design influence in his pieces. To continue on with my sofa train of thought, I wanted to point out the importance of selecting the right sofa fabric. When you're on a budget (as most of us are), your larger furniture choices will undoubtedly be long-term investments. Although it may be tempting to choose an upholstery fabric in the latest, chicest fabric pattern, the charm will likely fade long before the sofa needs to be replaced. Instead, choose sofas upholstered in neutrals- think gray, taupe, brown, olive, beige, etc. Think of your sofa as a 'little black dress.' Then, to add color and pattern to your space, use throw pillows. They are easily one of the most affordable ways to accessorize and brighten things up. To be even more budget-savvy, you can buy a handful of good down pillow forms in various sizes, and you will only need to switch out pillow covers for a quick room update. I've selected some fabulous bold and graphic throw pillows for a little inspiration. Enjoy!

Recently I had the unfortunate experience of being dragged into one of those awful discount furniture megastores enroute to Home Depot. Despite my cries of dismay, I held a faint hope that I might stumble upon some fabulous furniture find. I did not. What I found was actually worse than even my inner design snob expected. What I found was row after row of overstuffed soft furnishings, complete with mechanized recliners and built-in cupholders. Grinning children sipping slurpees from the store's in-house concession stand lolled happily next to their ecstatic parents, who were no doubt calculating how they could stuff their new monstrosities into their front doors. While I understand the importance of comfort, and absolutely believe that homes are meant to be lived in, people should demand more of their furniture. So I've selected pieces I propose as the antidotes to those upholstered disgraces. And while the sofas above are both beautiful and comfortable, I will admit that they are all lacking built-in cupholders. Instead, may I suggest a tasteful little end table and a coaster?

Fabulous Bedrooms

This past Christmas, my wonderful boyfriend gave me a large framed print of Pablo Picasso's Blue Nude. I was ecstatic because I love the painting, and I can now admire it every day. I love it so much, in fact, that I replaced my bed's headboard with the large painting. The dominating new blue color palette is worthy of a complete bedroom transformation. Unfortunately, my upcoming summer move makes it rather impractical to spend money on a room I will only be living in for a few more months. (I am still waiting on some big news in order to figure out my living situation). So while I can't make any design decisions for my own bedroom, I can post images of these fabulous bedrooms.

Dinner Party

As I mentioned in my previous post, I love to cook. (Hence the wishful kitchen-ing). I'm throwing a small dinner party this weekend, in fact. And, as with every time I have company for dinner, I lament my tiny apartment's lack of suitable dining accommodations. My sweet little vintage gate-leg table, flanked by two slipper chairs, simply doesn't cut it. In doing concept research for a design project I'm working on, (which I hope to document shortly), I stumbled upon these beautiful dining rooms. I particularly love the Swarovski dining room, complete with the delicate Blossom chandelier. I believe all successful dining rooms should have sophisticated seating, a little drama, and fresh flowers. Another crucial component is versatility. Try to envision a space where you can do everything from serving Thanksgiving dinner to hosting a swanky evening cocktail party to throwing a baby shower brunch. Think, 'classic white china' -- it's timeless for a reason. Bon Apetit!

Kitchen Dreams

I live in a charming century-old Boston brownstone apartment with a bow-front living room, views of a sweet little rose-garden, a stained-glass transom above my bedroom door, and even an authentic claw-foot tub. For a Southern girl who grew up in an extremely-modern Richard Neutra-esque house, I still thrill at the charming antiquity of it all. That said, as a bona fide foodie and amateur chef, I cringe at the tiny cupboards and apalling excuse for a stove that pass as my kitchen. So when I dream of the kind of house I hope to one day design for myself, my thoughts inevitably go to the kitchen. The beautiful kitchen images I've compiled above make my heart flutter. Maybe one day, someday, I will have one of my own...

In honor of Valentine's Day, I am devoting my first design blog to the color pink. In my own living room, bright pops of pink punctuate a neutral color palette of sage, cream and chocolate brown. In a rental, where painting my lackluster ivory walls is not an option, I find the cheerful notes of coral to be the perfect antidote to what could otherwise have been a rather uninspired space. In the images above, small bursts of pink in the form of flowers and throw pillows provide the perfect visual high note. The same principal can apply to all jewel-tones, but what better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than in a room brightened by lively pops of pink?
